TAVISTOCK College sixth form students have learned how to defend themselves using basic jujitsu as part of a programme of activities preparing them for independent living.

The students were shown CCTV of an unprovoked knife attack before being taught how to avoid placing themselves in a risky situation.

Jujitsu instructor Umberto Bergonzini, who is also the college's IT network manager, told them: 'Self confidence starts with awareness and prevention. When you resort to defending yourself physically it's already too late; you're never sure of the outcome, -

'By removing yourself from the situation, such as not walking through the park at night, you've taken away the opportunity.'

The students were taught basic jujitsu techniques and used pads to try out moves. They learned how to escape from grabs and discussed ways of avoiding becoming a victim.

'Running away from a threat is much better than confronting it,' added Mr Bergonzini.

Student Jennifer Kates said the session had been useful and fun so she would remember what she had been shown.

'It was very successful,' said Mr Bergonzini. 'They learned to be aware of their surroundings and situations they find themselves in. They can now read confrontational body language and use some basic self defence techniques.'

The Tavistock Jujitsu Club runs after school classes at Tavistock College and also meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Scout Hall in Pixon Lane. Anyone interested in joining can contact Umberto Bergonzini on 07866 720361 or come to one of the classes.
