Okehampton Ladies seconds 5

Callington Ladies 1

AFTER an extended seasonal break Okehampton Ladies second team resumed their fixtures on Sunday.

Oke began the game sleepily and Callington were quick to capitalise on the home side's slow start, passing the ball accurately around the pitch stretching the Oke defence to their limits. This early Callington pressure was rewarded when one of their attackers beat an Oke defender and slotted the ball into the back of the net to open the score.

This was the wake-up call that Oke ladies needed and they burst into life moving the ball swiftly around the pitch and creating spaces for attacking moves.

A determined Amanda Sim had a shot on goal which struck the post before ricocheting past the Callington keeper and into the goal for an equaliser. Both teams were now determined to break the deadlock with Callington forcing Oke full back Katy Graves to make some crunching tackles to keep the attacking forwards at bay.

It was Oke who went into the lead just before half-time when their forwards passed the ball around the circle, dodging the Callington defenders allowing centre forward Sophie Cunnington to hit home for the third.

The second half belonged to Oke with halves Willemijn Rademaker and Nat Dennis cutting out any clearing passes from the Callington defence

and providing quality passes to the Oke forwards. Sophie Cunnington then cleverly beat the Callington goalie for her second goal.

Youngster Tara Davidson played a mature game covering and tackling with confidence as well as looking dangerous in attack. After winning the ball from a Callington player Tara dribbled into the circle and shot at goal — her strong strike deflected off a Callington defender and past the goalie.

Captain Sophie Whiteley led her team by example at centre half, dictating the play and spreading the ball around the pitch.

Her team were still hungry for more goals and when Jo Drake took over the role

of centre forward she used her skill and strength to outwit the Callington defence and her strong strike on goal was neatly deflected into the back of the net by Hannah Whiteley.

Okehampton's player of the match was Tara Davidson.
