Tavistock Seconds 4 Penzance Seconds 3 WITH an impressive victory against Camborne hockey team Tavistock Seconds were looking to walk away with another three points from Penzance. However early on Penzance showed they were going to be a tough opposition, opening the scoring with a swift, well linked goal. After this initial wake up call Tavistock responded heartily; a succession of excellent play allowed Andrews to bring the score level with a cheeky back stick strike. Penzance stepped their game up, depriving Tavistock of the ball for much of the rest of the half; despite strong work from the defence as well as a few probing runs from the wingers, Tavistock were to begin the second half 2-1 down. It was a team with purpose who walked out onto the pitch after the break. The fluid midfield of Barratt and Barratt worked well by spreading the ball wide and breaking up Penzance?s play. This was rewarded when good linking play from Hunter and Andrews allowed the latter his second goal of the match to make the scores level. But Tavistock were unrelenting and a combination from Honey and Edwards managed to unleash Alford who charged into the D to put away Tavistock?s third goal. Tavistock?s confidence was restored and the steadfast defence refused to be broken by continuous drives from Penzance, with Costello and Rodder both putting in cracking tackles against the Cornish side. Numerous short corners were rewarded to both teams with no result until a powerful top of the D strike from Edwards gave Tavistock a two goal advantage over the visitors. The Cowen?s father and son pairing combined superbly on the left to create some good chances for Tavistock but a unlucky short corner decision against the home side allowed Penzance an opportunity which they were quick to seize upon. However this was not enough to get them back in the game and Tavistock were able to hold out to the final whistle, giving them the the three points. Man of the match : James Barratt
