OKEHAMPTON and District Tennis Club begins its 2006 summer season on Saturday April 1 on the Parklands tennis courts next to the Okehampton College all weather pitch. Play will commence at 2pm. All budding tennis players will be welcome to come and play during the three hour afternoon session. This will be the second season players have had access to the new Parklands courts. Following last year?s successes the club is looking to increase its number of players and to develop the tennis sessions it organises. The main objective of the club is to encourage anyone wanting to play tennis to do so, whether they want to pay competitively or socially. The club plays every Tuesday evening from 6pm to approximately 9.30pm and on Saturday afternoons from 2-5pm. Wednesday evenings are reserved for junior tennis when a minimum, of two courts will be reserved for children between the age of 12 and 16. Juniors can also be invited to join in playing with the adults on Tuesdays and Saturday afternoons. Throughout the season ? which runs to the end of September ? Saturday mornings are set aside for children under the age of 11. The club runs two sessions intended to encourage ball skills and basic tennis coaching is provided. All junior sessions are fully supervised. Parents are encouraged to come along and become involved with the club. Last season the club introduced a ladies? evening on a Thursday. These will be organised again this year when both adult and junior ladies will be welcome. For the more competitive players the club plays in the Exeter and District Tennis League. Following last year?s success when the ladies won their division and the men also gained promotion as runners up in their division, the club this year will be running two men?s and two ladies? teams. Anyone interested in playing tennis can always turn up at club time when a committee member will be available to make you welcome.
