THE first round of tennis played in the Plymouth and District League has now been completed. Tavistock had a convincing start to the season with a few new team members joining the ranks of established players.
Division one: Mens A (Linden Hardisty and Simon Prout, Phil Ruse and Josh Brown) v St Budeaux A (away), won 7-2, points seven. Division two: Mens B (Tony Du'Gay and Max Goodison, Phil Harbottle and Gareth George) v Hill Lane A (away), lost 2-7, points two. Division three: Mens C (Ray Hinton and Ron Skinner, Pete Rodgers and Matt Smith) v Saltash A (home), won 6-4, points six. Mens D (Paul Newton and Jeremy Hyde, Charles Snow and Bill Sparks) v Ivybridge B (home), won 8-1, points eight. Division six: Mens E (John White and Alex Samborne, Peter Bradley and John Stewart) v Whiteford Road (away), lost 3-6, points three. Division seven: Mens F ((John Mulley and Stephen Fletcher, Mike Baker and John Medland) v Looe B (away), won 7-3, points seven.
Peter Bradley made an impressive start as a new player in the league, and although the B and E teams lost, the score did not reflect their valiant play against exceptionally strong opposition.
Ladies A: (Sarah Lucas & Sue Parsons, Hilary Prout and Amanda Goodison) v St Budeaux A (away), won 6-3, points six. Sarah and Sue put on a strong performance while Hilary and Amanda, the new ladies' captain, more than held their own. Ladies B: (Alice Anstey and Olga Rogers, Natasha McNair Scott and Liz Webb) v Whiteford Road (home), draw 4-4, points four. A very competitive game with no clear winner. Ladies C: (Alison West and Jenny Read, Kathy Byrne and Melanie Broadhead) v Ivybridge E (home), won 7-3, points seven. Jenny and Alison played consistently well together to achieve clear wins whilst Kathy and Mel played two very close matches, with both culminating in exciting tie-breaks. Overall a good win for Tavistock.
A barbeque will follow on from the American Tournament taking place on Saturday, May 21 at 1.45 p.m. The draw for Wimbledon tickets will start at about 5pm. Those members wishing to be included in the draw must be present and pay for their tickets on the day.
