THE lack of parking spaces in Okehampton for cars with caravans and trailers is being addressed by West Devon Borough Council.

Commercial manager for the borough council Mark Hall said it was something the authority was looking at in the overall enhancement plan for Okehampton.

'This was first raised about eight months ago and we are currently looking at linking it together with the coach parking issue,' he said.

'At the moment the coaches are parking at the station but we are trying to find an alternative site in the middle of the town.'

The agreement between the borough council and Waitrose prohibits vehicles with caravans using the Waitrose car park and the Mill Road car park is unfeasible because there are not two car parking spaces directly behind each other.

'One of the other points raised is that there are no toilets for ditching sewage from caravans and this is something that is also being addressed,' added Mr Hall.

Okehampton trader Andy MacGregor said it was frustrating that there was nowhere in town he could park his car and trailer let alone a caravan.

'This an important issue because we are trying to promote ourselves as a tourist town yet there is nowhere to park if you are towing something,' he said.

'Although we have caravan sites around, if holidaymakers cannot drive into town and park they will drive off again.'
