A WEST DEVON primary school is opening after hours to allow local people access to its computers. Lydford Primary School will open from 4.30pm to 5.30pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays so that members of the local community can use the facilities. One classroom with four networked computers will be set aside each night. Headteacher Gill Page said: ?Our recent Ofsted report praised the school for its strong links with the local community and we wanted to develop them. ?We have a grant from Devon County Council to employ a supervisor for these two hours and to buy extra equipment and materials like paper and ink. ?Anybody, of any age, will be able to come in and use the computers. ?They can access the internet or merely use the computers for word processing.? Mrs Page said older people who did not have access to a computer at home could use the equipment to send e-mails to service providers like local councils. Existing pupils could use the equipment if they did not have a computer at home or former pupils, who had moved on to secondary school, might also drop in to use the facilities. The school?s governors have approved the development and might look at extending it if it proves popular. Devon County Council is committed to increasing the number of people in the county who are within three miles of an internet access point so they can contact the authority electronically. Lydford is the first primary school in West Devon to join the scheme. Its first computer open days will be on November 30 and December 1. They will usually continue through the school holidays with just one break over Christmas and the New Year.
