ABOVE average standards and good quality teaching are two of the aspects of Northlew and Ashbury Primary School which have been praised in an OFSTED report.

The school was described as having made significant improvements since it was last inspected in January 1997.

OFSTED inspectors concluded that overall the standards were above average and the majority of pupils achieved well in relation to their prior attainment.

The quality of teaching was good and teachers provided a high level of care, they said.

Standards in English, maths and science were above average and standards in literacy were good overall with numeracy being very good.

Pupils used their information and communications technology skills well to support their learning in other subjects.

Standards in ICT, art and design, history and music were above those expected nationally, said the report.

Other highlights of the report included pupils' very positive attitudes to school, their good behaviour, good leadership and management and provision for pupils with special needs.

Areas for improvement were standards in handwriting, spelling and presentation and enhanced provision for gymnastics and the youngest pupils' physical development.

Headteacher Nicola Lampe said: 'We are absolutely delighted with such a positive report and particularly the rating of 100 per cent satisfactory or better for our teaching.

'This is a rare accolade from OFSTED.'

She said most of the areas for improvement had already been identified in the School Improvement

Plan and she would be meeting with Devon County Council's PE advisor within the next few days to see how best the gymnastics provision could be improved.
