ST Andrew's Primary School at Buckland Monachourm has reached second position in performance league tables for Devon published this week.

The school was just pipped to pole position by joint top schools at Barnstaple and Ottery St Mary.

Headteacher Bill Houldsworth was delighted with the results.

'We are pleased that we have been able to sustain a high position over the last four years — this has been the best,' he said.

Mr Houldsworth attributed the school's results to good teaching, good staff and excellent support from parents, but pointed out league tables do not give a complete picture of school standards.

'It does have to be looked at in context of the year — they do vary considerably from year to year and tables don't do justice to all that goes on in school,' he said.

The league tables are calculated from tests taken last summer by eleven-year-olds in English, maths and science, the results showing percentages of children reaching the expected level four for their age.

Performance tables do not take into account numbers of pupils with special educational needs.

If children are absent from tests, they are marked as attaining level three, which can also affect overall school results.

Schools throughout West Devon represented a wide range of results, with Bere Alston Primary School shown in 10th position and Horrabridge Primary School at 14th.

Schools not listed in the county's league tables include special schools and those with fewer than ten children eligible to take the year six tests.

Schools in the bottom quarter of the table include Tavistock Primary School at 97th out of 110 schools represented in the league.

Acting headteacher Carol Trentham said the school had just received the results and would be evaluating them in due course.
