READERS of the Okehampton Times can qualify for a scholarship of up to £6,040 to study for a degree in journalism thanks to the newpaper?s proprietor, Sir Ray Tindle.

There are six scholarships available at the University of Buckingham for students living in the areas served by the Times and others in the Tindle Newspaper Group.

The Sir Ray Tindle Journalism Scholarships are for accelerated two-year honours degrees in combination with English. Apart from having to live in the newspaper?s circulation area, candidates should be studying for A or AS Level in English Language, English Literature, Media Studies or Journalism.

Two scholarships are reserved for mature students with equivalent work experience, not necessarily in journalism.

Qualifying applicants for the Tindle Scholarships will also be eligible automatically for general academic scholarships at the university, bringing the maximum available up to £6,040 for each academic year.

Successful candidates will also be offered work experience on Tindle newspapers.

Sir Ray Tindle, who received a Doctorate in Letters from the university said: ?I am delighted that the university has suggested these scholarships and I am sure that all our editors will welcome the opportunity to contribute to our industry in this way.?
