MORE than 3,000 years ago farmers in the Nile Valley made scarecrows to ward off birds — now they will be descending on a garden in West Devon. The Garden House, in Buckland Monachorum, is inviting businesses, schools, charities, services, youth organisations and individuals in the PL20 postcode to create scarecrows to go on display in the garden. Festivals of scarecrows are becoming increasingly popular within communities and visitor attractions. They create community spirit and organisers believe that 50 'fabulous' scarecrows would be delighted to make the Garden House their home throughout August. A special preview evening will be put on for creators of the scarecrows where they will be given the opportunity to walk around the gardens and view the scarecrows.
