Devon League 1

Tavistock First XV 17

Tamar Saracens First XV 25

THIS was a disappointing result for Tavistock, who have already defeated Saracens once, and drawn one cup game.

Tavistock dominated the first half, keeping all the possession but unable to convert it to points. Tamar suffered no such problems, scoring two tries in quick succession and converting one.

There was some recompense for Tavistock, when the towering Andy Hunt managed to steal a Saracens' throw in on their own line and charge over for a try just before half-time, which they failed to convert.

The second half involved more scoring from both sides, but Tavistock were always trying to catch up.

Scrum half Lee Greatrex showed why he is Tavistock's leading try-scorer so far this season with a superb opportunist try from the back of the scrum. The ball flew out of the back of the pack, Greatrex collected, and took the Plymothian's defence by surprise.

Tavistock conceded a number of penalties, although some of the referee's decisions took both teams by surprise. Tamar took their kicking opportunities well and their lead began to stretch.

An injury to Tavistock captain Paul Greenhill resulted in Chris Greatrex reappearing on the flank. He soon showed where his son's scoring ability comes from, brushing aside the defence to to go over the line.

The team welcomed Sean Buttel's competent first team debut and the return of Nick Sweet, both playing on the wings.

l If anyone is interested in joining Tavistock RFC they are welcome to join at training at the club at 7pm Tuesdays and Thursdays, or phone Paul Greenhill, club captain, on 01822 616792.
