RESIDENTS in Bere Ferrers commemorated the centenary of the beginning of World War One with a service and a sausage and mash supper in aid of Help for Heroes. The Olde Plough Inn hosted the supper, which was followed by apple pie, before the commemorative service held at the war memorial by the Rev Nick Law. Samson Wang and his wife Ruth had their wedding blessed by Mr Law on Saturday (August 3), and while they were in the village planning the blessing back in May, landlord Sarah Williams told them that the local trumpeters would be away on holiday on the day of the WW1 service. It came to light that Samson was a member in a brass band and when asked by Sarah if he would play the Last Post at the service, he was more than eager to help out. The supper was supported by Howells Butchers in Tavistock and M and J Baker Foodservice in the donation of food and a total of £500 was raised on the night. The community then went to the war memorial where Mr Law led a short service and candles were extinguished for each of the parishioners who lost their lives in WW1. Thanks were expressed to everyone who donated and supported the event, especially to Samson, whose last post acted as a poignant end to the evening.
