A CUT in the price of season tickets for West Devon Borough Council's car parks has led to an increase in sales. In April 2012, the council decided to reduce the cost of the season tickets to offer better value to local residents. The fee to park in Tavistock's Bedford, Abbey and Wharf car parks was cut from £720 to £400 per year with the price of a season ticket for Riverside and Mill Road, Okehampton, car parks in the town down to £195. Season tickets for the council's car parks in Chagford and Hatherleigh were reduced from £180 to £155. The latest figures reveal that the number of parking season tickets issues by the council has risen from 85 in 2012 to 118 in 2014. Cllr Robert Sampson, the council's community services chairman, said: 'I am pleased this step to cut the cost of season tickets is having a positive effect on the numbers being sold. 'The challenge now is to build on this success and consider how we can encourage further use of our season tickets which offer excellent value to residents who use our car parks regularly. 'As part of this, we plan to review the current limits on the number of season tickets that can be issued.' Figures have also revealed that during 2013/14 a total of 6,308 parking sessions at the council's car parks were paid for using RingGo – the service which allows motorists to pay for parking with a credit or debit card using their mobile phone.
