Duchy KO Cup second round
St Stephens 2
Mary Tavy 1
THE outlook was not good for Mary Tavy as they faced a premier side with a bare eleven after injuries from last week. But keeper Chris Hurford rose to the occasion putting in his performance of the season so far to keep the travelling team in the game.
James Coole put the visitors ahead with a shot which struck the roof of the net leaving the flailing home keeper clasping at thin air.
Inspired at their lead Mary Tavy battled hard and with chances at either end going begging were a goal to the good at half-time.
A bewildered St Stephens could not break down the away barrier with stand-in defender Nick John outstanding. An equaliser did eventually come with a scrambled goal which led the higher league side pressing for the winner.
Mary Tavy lost defender Andy Pedrick with a head injury and manager Lee Piper pulled on his boots to keep the numbers even. The heavy sloping pitch was hard going and both teams found it difficult in the final quarter but St Stephens broke Mary Tavy hearts, claiming the winner from close range.
