THE controversial Sainsbury's planning application will not come before the next meeting of West Devon's planning committee on June 24, the borough council this week confirmed. The supermarket giant has applied for permission to build a store, industrial units, and a building to house a new town police station on fields opposite Bishopsmead. But the application has stirred strong feelings in the town — many are concerned that a new large supermarket could affect the viability of Tavistock town centre. And the land on which Sainsbury's would like to build is classed as employment land, and has not been earmarked for retail use. The next occasion on which the application could be considered would be on July 22.
