THE Buckland Monachorum Area Friends Group of the Children?s Hospice South West has received a cheque of £1,600 from the crew of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Argus.

The crew raised the money whilst on service in the Persian Gulf during the recent conflict and current captain Paul Keogh presented the cheque to group chairman Linda Downing at a special ceremony on board the ship.

Captain during the ship?s Gulf deployment Robert Allen, who is pictured second from left, and lives at Crapstone, told how much of the money was raised by making a video of the ship?s activities.

Mrs Downing said that this was yet another example of the tradition of sailors thinking of the needs of others even when on active duty.

The Children?s Hospice supports terminally ill children and their families from all over the South West.

Without Government funding, it relies on the kindness of ordinary people to raise the £1.8 million a year required to keep the hospice going.

On behalf of these children, Mrs Downing said how grateful she was to Captain Allen and all his colleagues for their wonderful contribution.
