TRAFFIC orders affecting two busy areas in Tavistock have been supported by Tavistock Town Council due to safety concerns.
Devon County Council have proposed two waiting restrictions amendment orders for Crelake Park and the access to Crelake Industrial Estate.
The proposals were put before Tavistock Town Council’s development, management and licensing committee last week for the councillors to consider.
One relates to Crelake Park, by houses 28, 29 and 30 — the sharp corner that leads down to Crelake Close — which is proposed to have a ‘no waiting at any time’ on both sides of the road.
The second proposal is for the access to Crelake Industrial Estate which is earmarked for ‘no waiting at any time’ outside Tavistock Hire Centre, Jewsons and both sides of the road up the hill, leading to Tavistock Post Office.
Members of the town council raised concerns regarding the loss of a substantial number of parking spaces; where alternative parking would be available; the current practice of vehicles partially blocking the pavements and the problems this caused to the disabled and parents (particularly in Crelake Park); the problems currently faced by emergency vehicles and lorries and the current loss of visibility on the first corner on the access to Crelake Industrial Estate.
Vice chair of the committee Mandy Ewings said: ‘We did have a debate about this — it wasn’t a unanimous vote as some councillors felt that too many spaces were being taken away but we had to look at the health and safety implication of the restrictive view since the industrial estate has grown with many new business for Tavistock.
‘The council weighed up the loss of residential car parking against the health and safety aspects of the sharp bend on Crelake Park and we felt that due to children living and playing in the estate we should support it for safety aspects.’
Tavistock Town Council was approached by Devon County Council as a consultee on the proposed orders. The final decision lies with the county council.
The final date for comments on the traffic orders was last Friday (September 14).
