A BUS shelter for Exbourne has been put on hold over safety concerns.

West Devon Borough Council's planning committee will hold a site inspection before deciding the fate of the parish council's proposal.

The application seeks to erect a bus shelter on the forecourt of Exbourne Cross Garage, close to its junction with the A3072 to protect residents from inclement weather and encourage them to use the bus service.

But safety concerns have been raised because there are no footpaths to the site.

Planning officers, who have recommended the application for approval, pointed out to members of the planning committee this week that there were no footpaths between the Red Lion pub and Exbourne Cross — neither were there any on the A3072 at that location.

Although the forecourt of the garage invariably had vehicles awaiting repair or collection, these were stationary with vehicle movement limited to staff and the occasional motorist driving onto the forecourt for fuel.

Planners said despite the A3072 being the main primary route between Hatherleigh and Crediton, traffic flow was light.

The County Highways authority have no objections to the proposal, which Exbourne with Jacobstowe Parish Council feels will ensure the viability of the limited bus service.
