TAVISTOCK'S children have a new roundabout to enjoy.

The old one in the Meadows was smashed by vandals last year and at that time the town council was unable to find the resources to replace it.

Ruth Douglas, a pupil at Tavistock Primary School, wrote to the council asking for a new roundabout. 'The children miss it so much,' she said.

The then mayor, Cllr Judith Williams, agreed a replacement would be found as soon as possible and that June could have the honour of the first ride on the new machine. So last week the whole of class 5D was invited to watch the mayor and Ruth cut the ribbon to declare the new roundabout open for business.

Ruth said: 'I really hope everyone will look after it this time.'

Tavistock town clerk Roger Howard said the council had an objective of providing better play facilities for children throughout the town.

'Although the Meadows is used by everyone, a "Friends of the Meadows" users' group might be able to provide much needed comment and suggestions. If anyone is interested in this can they contact the council on 01822 613529.'
