There were some outstanding performances cross-country competition at Okehampton last week. Young runners competing in the Stephens' Shield, named and sponsored by former Okehampton College deputy head Jerry Stephens, and now in its 11th year. The college competed with teams of 10 in years seven, eight and nine from Launceston, Tavistock, Great Torrington, Crediton and Bude. Runners raced across country for two and a half miles. It was a good day for Okehampton College,who won the overall event for the third time in a row, the eighth time in 11 years. Jon Farr, head of PE at Okehampton College, said: 'It was an excellent event despite the weather. The runners did really well and deserve a lot of credit. They made it a really good competition.' Okehampton College year seven girls Claire Fraser and Sarah Hornby finished first and second, 50 seconds ahead of third place. Tavistock College's Nick Champion in the year nine race won by 47 seconds. In the eight races Okehampton College had four winners and 19 top ten finishes and all the children gave 100 per cent effort.
