A TAVISTOCK athletics group is looking for a new home because they are getting fed up with meeting in a car park.
Tavistock Run Project, founded just eight years ago, currently meet twice a week at Meadowlands car park and also use the running track at the town’s college.
But the club, which has produced such runners as Olympic hopeful Oliver Smart, is trying to find somewhere indoors where they can not only meet, but also change and have a shower after sessions.
They also want to use it as a base where they can expand the club and get more involved with their local community.
Tavistock Run Project was founded by Dave Chanter in 2013 with the objective of developing all areas of running within the community.
Initially, the project was a blank canvas but soon evolved into a small training group attracting a group of athletes who had a desire to take their running to the next level.
As the group continued to evolve it was decided to become affiliated under England Athletic rules and the project became a club in October 2017.
Mr Chanter, who is also a respected running coach, said he was keen to see them more involved in the community, which would include setting up a ’proper’ section for juniors.
The club’s founder said: ’We would like to continually grow and to embrace more options, but at the moment we’re meeting in a car park and working from cars, which is not ideal.
’We don’t have a junior section like we should and we need to get some more quality coaches on board to help us.
’As a club, we’re trying to come up with ideas about how we could become more involved with the community and getting people along to join us and just have some fun.
’One of our difficulties is finding premises which we can afford as a club. We thought we had something sorted, but that didn’t happen, so if there’s anyone out there who can help, we would be grateful.’
