THIS year's Ruby Run half marathon took place last Sunday, with runners and walkers from across the area braving the heavy rain.

This year's race started in Hatherleigh, finishing in Holsworthy. The first woman home was Vicky Pincombe, closely followed by the first male home Ian Gooding. The first local male home was Nicholas Lapham, with the first local female home Emma Squire.

The proceeds raised by this year's events are to be donated to Help for Heroes, who provide support for those from the armed forces wounded in combat since September 11 2001.

The event's main sponsor this year was Made-Well, a not-for-proft organisation based at West Fishleigh Farm in Hatherleigh which promotes understanding and appreciation of food, healthy lifestyles and to give local people access to affordable home-grown food.

As with tradition, the start and end points will alternate next year, with the 2012 race starting in Holsworthy and ending in Hatherleigh.

Results: Male category, 1, Ian Gooding; 2, Andrew Vallance; 3, Martin Colwill.

Female category, 1, (and firstt overall) Vicky Pincombe; 2, Sabine McLean-Thorne; 3, Claire Waters.
