THIS year sees the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and the Okehampton branch of the Royal British Legion is hoping to mark the occasion with events involving Normandy veterans.

On June 6, 1944, the Allies launched the greatest armada ever assembled. The landings on the Normandy beaches eventually led to the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.

The Okehampton Branch of the Royal British Legion hopes that the anniversary on Sunday, June 6, will involve a number of former servicemen, who actually landed on the Normandy beaches on D-Day.

Plans for the actual day to commemorate this historic occasion are still being formulated.

However, the Legion is anxious to identify the D-Day veterans in the area so they can be fully involved in the occasion.

The Royal British Legion is making an appeal to ask Times readers to provide the Okehampton branch with the names of those brave soldiers, sailors and airmen who took part in the momentous event.

Names should be sent to the branch secretary, telephone 01837 840757.
