ON behalf of the Rotary Club of Okehampton, I would like to thank the mayor, councillors, those from other organisations and the public who attended our 16th annual Remembrance Service on Friday November 11 at St James Church. The service was conducted by the Rev Philip Wagstaff from Fairplace United Reformed Church In his address, Philip said today was a time to remember and reflect on events in wars on people. He said that innocent people are now being drawn into conflicts because of modern technology. He referred to the RBL with the Poppy Appeal and the work it does to help ex-service personnel and the part the United Nations plays in the world for peace. Thanks are expressed to Mr Wagstaff, to Ian Cann the organist, Andrew Collier from Okehampton College who played Last Post and Reveille admirably, Joan Gundry, an RBL member, who was the standard bearer. The Bible reading was by Rotarian, John Marvin and there were two poems read: ?The Fallen?, read by Inner Wheal president Pam Chowings and the second ?It Never Snows in September? by John Gyllenship (Plymouth) written recently about his uncle Bill killed at Arnhem in September 1944, read by Rotarian John Stevens.
