YOUNG carers in West Devon were able to leave their responsibilities behind and enjoy themselves at an action-packed weekend away.

Thirteen of the Young Devon Project's young carers from across West Devon were treated to a weekend trip at the youth hostel in Okehampton, as a result of funding from the Rotary clubs of Tavistock, Okehampton and Hatherleigh.

The youngsters, aged between 7 and 15, took part in a range of exciting activities, including river gorging, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and learning survival skills.

Project manager Katherine Mullan said: 'The kids had a really good time. They were literally doing activities all day, from early in the morning to the evening and just stopping for lunch.

'They were doing things they had never tried before. It gave them an opportunity to interact with their peers and it was great to see them coming out of their shells.

'We're really appreciative of what the Rotary clubs have done for us. They have funded a few other day trips and they are going to fund other activities throughout the year.

'The kids don't pay to go on these trips so we're always trying to find funding from somewhere. For the Rotary clubs to offer funding is brilliant for us.'
