THE development of a new drinking water project in Tanzania is being supported by Okehampton Rotary Club. Germansweek-based charity Devon Aid Korogwe (DAK), has received £2,450 from the club and £950 from District Rotary to develop a new safe drinking water supply in the village of Lwengera Darajani in the Korogwe district of Tanzania. The project involves installing a new well and hand pump to provide clean and safe water to a population of 768. At present the only village water source is from open water-holes in a nearby riverbed which are contaminate with water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. The project will reduce disease and female drudgery and be of overall benefit to the health and viability of the village. The well will be concrete-lined and protected by a concrete apron and drain to dispose any surplus water to avoid stagnant puddles. A total of 10,000 Tanzania shillings have been collected by the people of the village as their contribution to the well?s future maintenance. This project will be managed by DAK, run by Vivien and Graham England, supported by a board of trustees. All funds under this project go directly to the survey and construction of the proposed well.
