ALMOST 800 purple crocus corms planted on the roundabout at Yelverton and another 200 in Princetown are now in full bloom.
The splendid sight is thanks to members of the Rotary Club of Yelverton — crocuses are symbolic of the aim of the Rotary movement to help towards the final eradication of polio throughout the world.
Millions of pounds and dollars have already been raised over many years by Rotarians towards this end and with extra impetus offered from Bill Gates, it is hoped to clear the final areas where this disease continues, in Afghanistan, Pakistan and parts of Africa.
The colour purple for the crocus flowers was chosen to represent the colour of the dye in which the little finger of the immunised child is placed, thus representing the gift of life free from polio. The final phase of this programme is called 'Thanks for Life'. At this time many Rotarians are fundraising and collecting for this cause — each £1 donated saves the lives of five children.
Yelverton Rotary Club expressed thanks to all who sponsored and generously supported their fundraising events over recent months, during which more than £4,000 has been for raised for various charitable causes, including the above and the purchase of four ShelterBoxes last year.
