AS talented Okehampton teenager David Dawson smashed another county shotput record last weekend he received a welcome cash boost from the town to help with training and travel expenses.
With his first throw at the Devon County Championships in Exeter on Sunday, the 18-year-old Olympic hopeful reached 15.98m which was enough to beat the record he set last year but after four more throws he stretched that to 16.85m.
David's personal best is now over two metres more than it was just a year ago and there seems to be no stopping the youngster who is taking the sport by storm.
His other achievements at the county championships were a silver medal in the discus and setting a new championship record in the hammer of 44.79m.
David Dawson senior also won three gold medals in the same events in the veterans' section.
This year young David, who is ranked number two in Great Britain in the Under 20s age group, is setting his sights on the World Junior Games but has to throw 18 metres to qualify.
His ongoing training and travelling expenses have been helped by Okehampton Rotary Club who have awarded David £250.
The Rotary organisation has joined forces with South West sports charity Sports Aid, who identified David as a talented youngster.
Regional performance manager for Sport Aid Martin Rush said David had the physical attributes and desire to succeed in the long term.
'He is an integral part of the South West Regional Squad and his performances indicate a strong possibility he will attain a world class potential,' he said.
Okehampton Rotary president Russ Thomas said the club was very pleased to help local youngsters who needed support.
