THE Rotary Club of Okehampton held its third successful charity golf Day at Ashbury golf course on June 1. Twenty-six teams of four entered, consisting of local firms and businesses, other Rotary clubs and friends, all of whom had an enjoyable day, despite showery weather. Many high quality prizes were donated by Ashbury golf shop. The winning team was West Devon Sani men, captained by Jim Burdus with a 117-point win. The Okehampton Glass and Devondale Electrics teams also won prizes, as did Alan Hawkins and Lloyd Thomas for ?nearest the pin?. The whole day raised £2,800 which will enable the Rotary Club to continue its work for local youth development and sports clubs. The Rotary Club expressed thanks to Simon and Joan Essex for generously giving the use of the course and golf buggies as well as the meals and many prizes. The course was in wonderful condition, having been prepared by Steve Harris and his greenkeepers, and the whole day ran smoothly due to the work of Simon Brothers and his staff. The date for the next charity golf day this year is July 20 and some places are still available. The cost has been kept the same, which represents good value for money, with coffee on arrival, 18 holes of golf, use of buggy and a sit-down meal, all for £20 a head, £80 for a team of four.
