A WEST Devon charity, which helps those less fortunate who live in Africa, said it is delighted with a donation from Okehampton Rotary Club, helped by a sponsored cross country run by students from Okehampton College. Devon Aid – Korogwe (DAK) were extremely happy with a bumper £4,500 provided by the club. The money will provide Vingo Kwamshemshi, a village in the Korogwe district of Tanzania, with two wells supplying clean water. At present, the village women are having to climb down into the valley to fetch their drinking water from a small river, where the cattle and other livestock are taken to drink, before carrying it back up for their families, knowing it to be polluted and the cause of so many illnesses within the community. DAK trustees are most appreciative of the support given by Okehampton Rotary Club which has already funded a well for Lwengera Darajani, where the crocodile infested river source regularly dries out in the dry season. A spokesman said: 'To know young people in the Okehampton area are aware of some of the difficulties besetting others of their own age and are willing to help fund-raise to try to help solve some of the problems is a great bonus.' Based in Bratton Clovelly, DAK has been helping Korogwe villages for ten years and is now well known around West Devon. More information on the charity's activities can be found on its website http://www.water4korogwe.com">www.water4korogwe.com or by calling 01837 871310. l On Friday, March 16, DAK will be holding its tenth fundraising 'Wine and Wisdom' evening in Bratton Clovelly Parish Hall. Everyone is welcome. On Wednesday, April 18, Buckland House will be the venue for another supper evening — which will be accompanied by excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan's operas.
