TAVISTOCK Rotarians got out their brushes and paint last week to put the finishing touches to Tavistock Area Support Services' new TaviMobility conservatory at the Anchorage Centre.

TASS and the TaviMobility Scheme was one of the club's key charities this year with £4,500 being donated via a variety of fundraising endeavours, including a successful golf day in May.

Rotary president Geri Parlby said: 'I am delighted that we have been able to support TASS, a charity that offers so much help to so many older people both in Tavistock and the surrounding villages.'

Rotarians are familiar figures shaking collecting tins for Rotary charity ShelterBox and other good causes, but it also offers practical support to the local community.

'We really enjoy rolling up our sleeves and getting involved,' said Geri who has been a regular volunteer at the Tavistock Memory Café since it first opened four years ago.

'As well as taking on practical tasks, like painting the TASS conservatory, we are always pleased to be able to use our professional skills to put something back into the community.

'An excellent example of this is the Job Club.  Over the past six months Rotarian volunteers, who between them have a wealth of experience as employers, have been providing weekly sessions in the library offering advice and support to local people trying to get back into the job market.

'Some of the people we have advised have already found jobs and we are now talking with Tavistock Chamber of Commerce to see how we might be able to develop the Job Club.'
