A HATHERLEIGH woman will be traveling to Australia next month, following in the footsteps of a pioneer who made the original journey more than 200 years ago. Philip Gidley King, the first governor of Australia, was born in Launceston and was married to Hatherleigh-born Anna Josepha Coombe, who accompanied her husband to the new colony in 1791. Now, Hatherleigh town crier Ros Chard is hoping to head to Australia to compete in the world town criers? championships, taking place at Maryborough in Queensland in September. Ros is raising funds for the trip. The George Hotel in Hatherleigh will be holding an ?Oz Day? on Sunday, August 28. There will be a ?barbie? during the day followed by a quiz and raffle in the evening. Before then, Ros is also holding a quiz night in the Tally-Ho! on Sunday, August 21. Following the world championships, Ros will head down to Melbourne for another world invitational competition. Ros has a busy time ahead this month she will be announcing the arrival of the New Trafalgar Dispatch into Okehampton on August 16, as well as attending Ilfracombe Carnival and a criers? competition at Topsham.
