WOULD you pay good money for an old bit of stone floor in a little bag?
Well, perhaps, if it were an 'old bit of floor' walked on by royal feet for the last 200 years, and particularly if you were Australian or American it seems.
Kevin Kodritsch from Yelverton has bought 1,200 tiny pieces of certificated stone floor taken from the private royal chapel of St George at Windsor Castle in 1983 — before the great fire that gutted the royal residence.
He aims to sell them to 'royal' collectors, who have been paying £35 through 'Majesty' magazine for similar fragments. At that price the collection is worth some £42,000.
'There's quite a bit of demand for them abroad apparently. They love them in America and Australia. It's the whole package really, the little bag and the certificate, they make quite a unique gift,' said Mr Kodritsch.
These morsels are all that remain of the floor, which was packaged for sale by the New York Daily Record.
The paper went into liquidation and they laid undiscovered in a warehouse for 13 years, before Mr Kodritsch unearthed them.
'I will be selling most, but have promised that some will be used to raise money for the Caravans to Kosovo appeal run from Truro,' he said.
The find also included a mint condition Pitkin Pictorial, apparently of great interest to collectors.
'It is a first edition and was printed in 1973. This is a rare collectible in its own right,' he said.
