TAVISTOCK Sir Francis Drake Bowling Club members who attended the annual meeting were invited to witness member Roger Bawden being installed as president of Devon County Bowling Association later in the month. Roger is the first Tavistock club member to achieve this position.

Members also took the opportunity to honour member Tom Sharpe by electing him to be the club's first vice-president.

Prior to stepping down from office, chairman C B C Tremaine reported on the year's achievements and thanked all members for their support.

Officers elected: chairman, Mrs Betty Browse; vice-chairman, Tony Coombs; general secretary, Geoff Cork; treasurer, Der Saunders; match secretary, David Perry; catering secretary Mrs Jean Flay and Mrs Yvonne Meneer; committee member, George Blackburn; auditor, Gerald Whitlock; club captain, Tony Coombs.

Ladies' section officers elected: ladies' captain, Mrs Hazel Lovell; vice-captain, Mrs Gill Saunders.

Men's section officer: secretary, David Perry; vice captain, Brian Preece; competition secretary, Vic Doidge; selection committee, Eric Stevens and Pat Sykes.

Members heard that next season the club will again hold two public open days where free bowling and tuition is offered to anyone interested in trying the game or joining the club.

The club will again repeat its highly successful 'open tournament' where some 24 teams from across the country compete for up to £400 in prize money.

The club will also host several high profile county games thanks to Roger Bawden's year as county president.
