A RETIRING market trader is bound to have 'a little more time on his hands' after clocking up a quarter of a century serving customers at Tavistock Pannier Market.
Roger 'The Watchman' James, aged 65, who lives in Tavistock, said he will miss working with the many friends he has made there since he opened his watch repair and accessory kiosk 25 years ago.
The former Devonport Dockyard electrical fitter and estimator told the Times: 'I have always like the pannier market because it has a really friendly atmosphere. I have made friends here and, sadly as well, lost many friends who are no longer with us.
'The whole town is friendly and I will miss all my friends at the market but I had to pull the plug sometime.'
During his time at the market Roger has also raised thousands of pounds for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust and local heart charity HeartSWell.
Market Reeve Duane Carruthers described Roger 'very much part of the furniture' at the market and said he would be missed.
Duane said: 'I have known Roger for nearly 20 years and he has been an integral part of the pannier market. I also consider him to be a good friend.'
His fellow traders clubbed together and presented him with a beautifully made cake in the shape of a clock, a bottle of brandy, a picture drawn by local artist Mark Denman, a brandy glass engraved by Shaun McDermott, a special card from Andrew Birch and a Tavistock tie.
Mayor Harry Smith told those gathered to mark Roger's retirement: 'Roger is an established trader and it is sad to see him go. Well done and thank you Roger for everything you have done here.
'Tavistock Pannier Market depends on people like you. Good luck in your retirement.'
As for the watch repair service in Tavistock Pannier Market, it has no intention of winding down as someone else will be taking over Roger's kiosk.
Roger himself intends to carry on repairing watches from home and intends to enjoy lots of walks, particularly on Dartmoor. Of course, he will always find a friendly welcome at Tavistock Pannier Market — any time.
