TWO West Devon communities will be the latest to benefit when the Devon in Touch roadshow pulls up next week.

People living in Shebbear and South Zeal will be able to step on the bus and experience Devon County Council?s pioneering initiative to promote interest in information technology.

The Devon In Touch Roadshow will be outside the shop in South Zeal on Thursday, November 4, from 11am to 4pm, and on the following day the bus heads on to the village hall car park at Shebbear, also 11am to 4pm.

Visitors to the Devon in Touch roadshow can get instant access to a world of information aboard a purpose-built vehicle commissioned by the council.

Equipped with the latest technology, the vehicle gives people in rural communities the chance to use the internet and experience the benefits of going on line. They can also find out more about county council services and how to access them.

The roadshow began its tour last September and has so far visited more than 50 communities.

Staff on board have been delighted by the response, particularly that of older people keen to discover the fun of surfing the web and sending e-mails to friends and relatives at home and abroad.

?We have had some wonderful appreciative comments,? said manager Lisa Wilson. ?Many people have said the trial session has persuaded them computers can play a useful role in their lives and should not be feared. Some have enjoyed it so much, they have bought their own equipment.

?Some people have become hooked immediately and have stayed with us several hours, gaining more knowledge and sharing their experiences with other visitors.?

The roadshow is a Devon County Council service, in association with BBC Radio Devon and Devon Fire and Rescue.

The vehicle is equipped with six computers for free use by the public.

Using specially dedicated money made available by the government for local authorities, Devon In Touch is an online rural information service designed to encouraging people who do not currently use the internet to give it a try. It also promotes county council services.

A visit by the Devon In Touch Roadshow can be arranged by any community group of 12 or more adults, by ringing 01392 383444.
