WITH reference to the letter (January 26) re horse riding on the A386, while sympathising with the predicament in which your correspondent found herself, in this day and age one has to question the wisdom of riding a large, easily frightened animal on a main road that allows speeds of up to 60mph on some parts, especially when there is the whole of Dartmoor to ride on. It is all very well for some to say that the horse was here before the car etc etc, but like it or not, the roads today are designed for (and paid for) by motor traffic, not horses. It also has to be said that inconsiderate behaviour on the road is not always one-sided. How often are drivers confronted by two riders side by side or forced to follow a horse box at 25mph for miles because the driver does not have the courtesy to pull over when able to do so? Perhaps we should all learn something from each other. Paul Mercer Ivy Cottage Peter Tavy
