RESIDENTS in Bere Ferrers parish are being asked on their views on how to improve road safety at one of Bere Alston's busiest areas.

For the past year, Bere Ferrers Parish Council has been in discussion with Devon County Highways about the safety of Bere Alston pedestrians, crossing from Woolacombe Road into Bedford Street (B3257).

These users will increase, say the council, including children, when the new estate in Woolacombe Road has its new residents.

The present estate footways build plans, show pedestrians having to cross at 45 degrees over this crossroads and the parish council believes this could be the cause of concern over safety at one of the busiest road junctions in the village.

County Highways has asked the parish council to carry out an informal consultation on its proposed solution to these safety issues.

This would involve making Grove Lane one way (from Bedford Street in the direction of Broad Park Road – Grove Lane is the extension of Woolacombe Road in a northerly direction). Then the existing Bedford Street footway could be extended across the top of the lane and give a direct crossover.

Brian Lamb, chair of Bere Ferrers Parish Council, said that the council was asking for the views of residents on this proposal, in order for the parish council to formulate a response to County Highways.

He urged that comments should be sent to the parish clerk before Saturday, November 15 by email to [email protected]">[email protected] or letters to the Council Office, Station Road, Bere Alston, PL20 7EJ.
