A ROAD linking Callington to Tavistock last week closed for approximately ten weeks. Cornwall County Council's contractor (CORMAC) closed the road to strengthen Wesley Villas retaining wall, located on Sand Hill adjacent to the westbound carriageway in Gunnislake. Minor delays are anticipated at peak times and road users are advised to drive with caution. A temporary 20mph speed limit has been implemented through the works area for safety reasons. The retaining wall is to be strengthened as part of the county council's programme to upgrade weak highway structures within Cornwall. The works have been designed to minimise the impact on the structure and its surroundings — it will involve small areas of rebuilding and stabilisation prior to the installation of a piled retaining wall beneath the carriageway, adjacent to the existing wall. Reconstruction of the stonework parapet will complete the works.
