George Belli Cup, round one
Chagford 3
Riviera Spurs 1
SPURS completely belied their lowly league placing by matching Chagford in almost every department.
Unfortunately, in the first ten minutes, Botham upended his attacker to concede an unneccessary penalty. This was comfortably converted by Alan Savage and the visitors had taken the initiative.
When the hosts had settled, Emanuel and Miller caused problems for what was to prove a solid defence. Although support came via Stone, Davis and Williams penetration was lacking, the latter spooning the clearest chance over the crossbar.
Chagford gambled on introducing a semi-fit Johnston after half-time and this seemed to inject more life into the side. Following their skipper's example, Chagford started to dig deeper and eventually came good with Andrew Davis notching a 70th minute equaliser.
Extra-time looked to be on the cards for a second week running but Spurs were thankful to their keeper Steven Bleir for holding Chagford at bay.
Chadwick came on for Stone, who had run his socks off, and the youngster had a major contribution in Mark Williams' 80th minute goal. Williams took on a well set pass and outran everybody to score his first competitive goal of the season.
Davis killed off the game five minutes later.
Chagford now entertain high flyers, Kingsteignton Athletic, in the league this week. Kick-off 3pm.
Ivor Andrews Cup round one
Chagford Res 2
Foxhole Utd Res 1
THE Reserves may have thought their opponents were easy prey, having taken three points from the Foxes two weeks before.
Although they opened brightly, Chagford were drawn into a midfield battle of attrition with Potter, Ralph and Haxton predominant. A settled back four looked reasonably comfortable and Geering showed greater confidence in goal.
Mortimore had the clearest early chance but his eighth minute header was somehow pushed over by the visitors' keeper. Jon Scarry, playing alongside the hard working Chris Oliver, showed a cool head on young shoulders by reading the defensive line excellently.
Scarry poached his second goal in consecutive games. Oliver's back header was helped across the box by Potter and Scarry picked his spot, to finish a fine team move.
Within eleven minutes of the restart, Scarry was called upon again and duly obliged by thumping the ball home.
Midway through the half, summer madness seemed to descend upon the match as both teams had a man dismissed. Ballard had been on for barely five minutes, as a substitute for Potter, when he and his marker had a set to. Both deservedly saw red and now face bans.
Within minutes of the end, Mortimore and Scarry went close and Ralph put a corner kick off the bar. It was Foxhole who were to have almost the last word when they slid the ball just inside the post.
The Reserves now travel to meet Marldon in the league. 3pm kick-off.
