FOR the first time in many years Okehampton entered a team in the Okehampton Deanery Bellringers Competition and to their surprise they brought home the shield.
Kay Weeks, who has been bellringing for two and a half years and Susan Dodd, who has 18 months experience, won the intermediate section of the competition which was held at North Tawton.
Fourteen teams took part in the whole event which also includes an advanced level challenge.
Secretary of Okehampton Bellringers Zoe Bradshaw said the group were all very proud of Kay and Susan.
'We are very pleased because we have not been strong enough in numerical terms to enter a team for many years,' she said.
'These ladies had done so well with the ringers we thought it would be worthwhile entering them and they carried off the shield.'
Mrs Bradshaw paid tribute to Ali Waterson from Petrockstowe who had coached the two women.
