EMPOWERMENT of the Okehampton community was on the agenda last week as part of a special seminar held in the town. A presentation took place in Okehampton where members from different community groups heard 'inspirational messages' on the empowerment of rural communities. More than 50 people from across Devon heard community regeneration practitioner, Hazel Stuteley OBE, give a talk on community empowerment, asset transfer and putting people at the heart of developments. Hazel focussed on the proposal to redevelop the Old Mill site Okehampton noting that it is 'a fantastic opportunity for everyone to make something really great for Okehampton's community.' Ewan Rae, manager of the Okehampton based, Devon Heartlands Community Development Trust, said: 'Everyone should be really encouraged by Hazel's message that taking a risk and backing community developments really pays off.' Devon Heartlands have been working in partnership with other groups including Okehampton College, West Devon Borough Council and the Mill Group to explore ways to develop learning services on the Old Mill site. They have envisaged a mixed site for learning, including vocational training, and community use. The scheme is still at an early stage and a feasibility study is being carried out to provide information on how to take the proposals forward. Devon Heartlands vice chairman, Bob Dunnett, added: 'From our work on the Okehampton Town design statement it is clear that the community want to see these old buildings saved and put to good use.'
