TWO Horrabridge cyclists have returned from a fundraising ride having raised nearly £4,000 for charity.
Vicky and Martyn Woodbridge-Harris cycled 325 miles in three days from Woodbridge in Suffolk to Exeter in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The ride, which took place over the weekend of July 24 to 26 was, said the couple, a fantastic success.
Vicky said: ‘Our first day was a distance of 145 miles. Although the day started well, by 11 am it was raining hard and didn’t stop until well after we finished cycling at 10 pm that night.
‘We rode through puddles that were over six inches deep and through virtual rivers running down the roads. On top of that we had four punctures on the first day that were not fun to fix in the rain.
‘Luckily, we had a support vehicle and our driver, Jerry, kept ustopped up with hot drinks and flapjack.’
The next day was a completely different affair with sunshine and rolling roads through Buckinghamshire and Wiltshire. The weather didn’t give much of a reprieve though and more rain greeted them on the third and final day from Westbury to Exeter.
‘The sun came out for the final 15 miles into Exeter, allowing us to greet family on the quayside. But not long enough to pop a cork in the dry!’ continued Vicky.
Martyn said that they had been touched by the generosity of people who had sponsored their ride. ‘We had some very generous friends who donated money but were also amazed by the willingness of strangers to donate too.
‘It seems that so many people know of someone who has been affected by this disease and want to help find a cure or care for those with it.
We’d both like to thank every single person who donated; you have helped make a difference. We have almost doubled our original target of £2,000!’
Martyn and Vicky also want to thank Tavistock Cycles, Moorgate Residential Home and Horrabridge Cavaliers who helped sponsor the logistics of the event.
Their website www.justgiving.com/VickyWoodbridge-Harris is still open for donations with every penny going to Prostate Cancer UK. Martyn and Vicky thank the Times readers for their support.
