AN autistic child from Tavistock is making huge strides in his development with the help of Tavistock Primary School and carers from the Son-Rise programme, according to the boy?s father. Three-year-old Paul Lewis, who earlier this year had a special playroom built with funds raised by members of the Tavistock community, now has a vocabulary exceeding 50 words. Paul?s eye contact has also improved and he is pointing to and interacting with other children. His father, Allen, said: ?This is a very exciting breakthrough. Paul?s autism is severe but this great improvement bodes well for the years to come.? The playroom has been designed to maximise Paul?s interaction with others and for the past few weeks specially trained carers from the Son-Rise project have been working closely with him. Having already been overwhelmed by the support of the local community, the Lewis family is now looking to raise even more funds with a horse ride ? all proceeds from which will go towards fitting Paul?s playroom with electrics and equipment. Allen hopes to get 100 riders to participate in the 15-mile ride on July 10 which will start at Soussons, Postbridge, and finish at Spooners Kennels in Sampford Spinney. Refreshments will be available after the event when medals, donated by Sally?s Engravings, will be awarded to those who take part. To ride in the event contact Allen Lewis on 01822 614335. Tickets are £10 each. Allen has also extended an invitation to families with autistic children to come and view Paul?s playroom and is currently on the lookout for volunteers over 16 years of age to work with Paul. Special training will be provided to those who are able to help.
