CONGRATULATIONS to the Tavistock town mayor and town council for letting in a breath of fresh air at the meeting on Monday October 2 and letting everyone have their say on the future of the Guildhall loos and surrounding area. Congratulations too to the staff of the Tamar Valley project for attracting a great pile of money to West Devon to boost the Tamar Valley?s economy, mostly for Morwellham now, but much more to come to the town, and all of it to encourage visitors to enjoy themselves and spend money here. As a borough councillor, it was my job to listen to the views of residents at the town meeting, and I share the views expressed in your report that there was a clear consensus in favour of keeping the loos where they are and modernising them on their present site. I am sure that borough and town councillors will work together in partnership over the next few months to achieve this result. Lots of other interesting points were made at that meeting which I have noted, but the main thing now is to rid the town of these shabby loos and create a facility we can all be proud of. R F Eberlie Cllr, West Devon Borough Council I AM glad at the headline of the paper (October 5). Of course the lovely old toilet block should be saved. How dare our councillors, or indeed any councillors anywhere, want to demolish the original character buildings of our lovely old town? No-one should be allowed to. If everything original and historic is destroyed, where will we be able to find any wonderful, untouched, beautiful old towns anyway? Those toilets only need interior refurbishment. It would be criminal to destroy the building, so lovely, it matches the whole of the square, and do not even destroy any of the trees there, either. Personally, nothing at all should be done to the centre of Tavistock. Leave it alone. But it?s just too lovely for some, who?d rather look at uninteresting, characterless modern square blocks, which you can see everywhere. Tavistock is special. Keep it that way ? boot out any councillors with big ideas to change lovely old towns ? we don?t want change, we don?t want them, and don?t want our money wasted on unnecessary projects such as are in the pipeline at present. I hope the alterations for the proposed visitor centre do not materialise. We love Tavistock as it is! Mrs P Duke Mary Tavy WHY are there not any public toilets open on a Monday? Because the toilets above Somerfield have been closed for years, due to much needed redecoration and updating. The Guildhall toilets are now closed for the same reason and the market toilets are closed on Mondays! Why have West Devon Borough Council no funds to upgrade these simple public services? It?s great for Tavistock to be best Market Town, Best Food Town, World Heritage status etc, etc, but where are our valued visitors/customers going to relieve themselves on a Monday? If I were a visitor to this beautiful town and I had to walk all the way to the Bedford car park, I would do so and then get back in my car and leave. Mike Hooper 35 Brook Street Tavistock
