Stan Wilson Cup Final Okehampton Argyle Reserves 3 Cheriton Fitzpaine 2 (after extra time) In this cracking final played at Crediton, the result was in doubt right up to the last minute. Okehampton had the better of the early exchanges and after 30 minutes, their superior passing was rewarded when a lovely through ball from Mark Hampson was latched onto by Dan Leahy, who coolly lifted the ball over the Cheriton keeper from just inside the penalty area to give the Okes a lead. Argyle continued to look the better side and with more luck in front of goal they could have increased their lead. However the second half was a different story as Cheriton came out and played their best football, causing the Argyle's defence more than a few problems. They pulled level from a well-taken penalty after having a player brought down on the edge of the box. Cheriton moved into a 2-1 lead when a beautifully weighted free kick was firmly headed home from five yards. Okehampton goalie, Harry Geering, who was in fine form all evening had no chance with either goal. Play then swung from end to end as the Argyle pushed forward looking for an equaliser. They brought on substitutes Adam Mortimer and Ricky Drew to boost their attack and several good chances went begging. With just five minutes of normal time remaining, latching on to a flick-on by James Callaghan, Adam Mortimer used his pace to race clear of the Cheriton defence and coolly slot home past their keeper to send the match into extra time. This continued to be exciting end to end stuff with Okehampton having the better of the first 15 minutes and Cheriton the better of the second, but try as both sides might, neither seemed to be able to make that vital breakthrough, and the crowd resigned themselves to a penalty shoot-out. But with only 30 seconds remaining, Ricky Drew received the ball from a throw-in wide on the right, turned and blasted home a fabulous goal from 25 yards. There was barely time to restart the game before the final whistle blew. It was bad luck to Cheriton Fitzpaine but a great victory for Argyle who won this cup from a starting entry of 50 clubs. l As winners of the eastern section of the Devon County Intermediate Cup Argyle Reserves now progress to the county semi-finals, where they are away to Horrabridge Reserves.
