Pertemps Devon
Premier Cup third round
Tavistock 2
Newton Abbot 1
THE Lambs gained sweet and ample revenge with substitute Steve Daymond's last-minute goal in extra time — they had lost to their Devon League rivals in last season's semi-final in similar circumstances.
Mark Wall almost got the Lambs off to the perfect start with his first-minute volley tipped around a post by Neil Montadon. They continued to attack before Newton's Robbie Turner had the ball in the Lambs' net only to be adjudged to have fouled keeper Andy Meeds. Turner was off-target with another attempt from a Danny Gaze free kick.
But the Lambs were having more territorial advantage and went ahead in the 43rd minute with a well taken goal. The ball came quickly out of defence after a Newton free kick for Rob Hawkins to control on the halfway line. His pass sent Chris Gott away and from the edge of the area he sent the ball across the face of the goal and in off the upright.
The second half started with Nathan Blamey going down injured and he received lengthy treatment before continuing and was later replaced by Daymond.
Hawkins then set up stand-in striker Craig Hodge to volley just wide of the target, Daymond shot over after a good run before the Lambs had a great chance to go further ahead.
Hawkins wriggled free from a challenge in the area to find himself with just the keeper to beat but blasted over from close range. It proved a costly miss as within two minutes the visitors drew level. It looked a foul all the way as Turner challenged Meeds to a cross close to goal. The ball came out of Meeds' grasp to drop, hit a post and fall for the striker to have the simplest of tap-ins.
The home side found themselves in deeper trouble 10 minutes before the end when Shaw was shown the red card after a second bookable offence. It left the Lambs having to defend for the remainder of normal time with the referee adding six minutes of injury time - in the last minute of it Meeds did well to keep the Lambs in the game with a great save from Dave Stocker .
Both sides went for the winner from the start of extra time. Jaimie Carwardine came on for Wall and Meeds made another save to deny the visitors before the game came to a dramatic close.
James Cole's free kick from the halfway line was headed across goal by Darren Babb and the ball flew up into the air in the Newton area — it fell to Daymond with his back to goal to turn and shoot through a crowd of players and score off a post.
It puts the Lambs into the last 16 where they will meet Exeter Civil Service at Langsford Park on Saturday November 24.
Manager Chris Abbott said: 'A tremendous result against all the odds. We battled well throughout and rode our luck at times and thoroughly deserved it at the end.'
The whole of the draw for the Devon Premier Cup is made prior to the start of the competition and if the Lambs remain successful they will have home advantage in every round including the semi-final.
