THE Times has already given some space to the newly established Friends of the Canal, which is much appreciated.
This group, of which I am a member, aims to make our town a more attractive place, worthy of its former title of 'Best Small Market Town in England', by removing the litter disfiguring our streets and paths as well as the canal and encouraging people to put their rubbish in waste bins or take it home.
It's known that clean streets discourage litter, so we need volunteers to monitor areas of Tavistock, remove litter on organised Tidy Tavy Days, bring in new ideas and other organisations and help in whatever ways they can. Though the various authorities are restricted financially, they will support us by removing collected rubbish, providing extra waste bins where necessary and even some financial support.
There will be a meeting for all those willing to help on Saturday September 3 at 10.30am at the Wharf. People can leave their details and we shall organise a day to tidy up an area of Tavistock later in the month.
Many residents, like me, dislike the litter but have felt helpless to do anything about it. This is the best opportunity in years, given the support of the councils and SW Water, to restore pride in our lovely town. Other places are litter-free and we can do this too.
