TRANSPORT is being arranged to take users of the Tavistock Old Folk's Rest Room to the planning meeting in Hatherleigh next week where the fate of the facility will be decided. West Devon Borough Council is laying on a minibus/coach which will pick people up from outside the rest room at 8.45am next Tuesday (July 22). Owners of the rest room building in Brook Street Hunstrete Estates are proposing to demolish the structure and redevelop the site for retail use, but it has met much opposition. Users and supporters of the rest room say it is an important facility and meeting place for pensioners and should be retained. There was criticism that next week's meeting was being held at the other end of the borough at Hatherleigh Community Centre which many of the elderly users could not get to. Chairman of the borough's planning committee Philip Sanders said: 'Having looked at the arrangements for the meeting and listened to the concerns of the users of the Tavistock rest room we will be providing a mini bus/coach to take all who wish to attend the meeting. 'The item is the first on the agenda and the minibus will stay at Hatherleigh to transport them back to Tavistock.' Planning officers are recommending that councillors approve the application by Hunstrete Estates.
